Solar water pumping

The right pump for your water source

Solar pumping is simple: panels make electricity, a controller turns it into the right supply for the pump, and the pump fills a tank while the sun shines. What matters is choosing the right type and size. That's where we help.

Pumps up to 60 000 L / hour

Three types of solar pump system

Borehole · solar only

DC submersible

A brushless DC pump inside the borehole, driven directly by the panels through an MPPT pump controller. It is the simplest and lowest-cost system, suited to domestic water, livestock and kitchen gardens.

  • 0.5-4 HP · 4-5 m³/h
  • Max head 55-285 m
  • Standard or stainless-steel impeller

Borehole · solar + grid

AC/DC hybrid submersible

The controller runs on solar and switches to KPLC power or a generator when you need water after dark or on a cloudy day. Suits schools, institutions and serious irrigation.

  • 1-12.5 HP · 5-14.4 m³/h
  • Max head up to 412 m
  • Single- and three-phase AC backup
Hybrid packages →
River · dam · shallow well

DC surface pump

The pump sits on the ground and draws from open water. It moves large volumes at low head, for drip, sprinkler and furrow irrigation.

  • 180 W-2.2 kW
  • 1 500-60 000 L/h
  • Head up to about 17 m

Which borehole pump do I need?

This gives a first estimate from our catalogue data. A site survey confirms it before any money changes hands.

Rough guide: a dairy cow drinks about 80-100 L a day, a household uses 300-500 L, and drip irrigation needs about 25-40 m³ per acre per week in the dry season.

How we calculate

  1. Total head = water level + tank height + 10 % of the pipe run (friction allowance).
  2. We keep pumps whose recommended depth covers that head.
  3. Flow at that head is estimated from each pump's maximum head and flow.
  4. Daily water = flow × 5.5 peak sun hours, a typical figure for most of Kenya.

Common questions

Do I need batteries?

No. Pumps run directly from the panels, and the water tank does the storing. If you need water at night, choose a hybrid pump that can also run on grid or generator power.

What does a package include?

The pump, its solar pump controller and the solar panels listed. Installation, riser pipe, drop cable, panel mounting and transport outside Nairobi depend on your site, so we quote them after the survey.

What information should I have ready?

Your borehole drilling and test-pumping report (depth, water levels, yield), the tank height and distance, and roughly how much water you use per day.

Stainless or standard impeller?

If the borehole is sandy or the water is hard, the stainless-steel impeller lasts longer. For clean, low-sand water, the standard impeller is the better value.
